According to research from comScore, online sales between Tuesday and Sunday of last week totalled USD546 million, 35 percent lower than the USD837 million in sales in the same period the previous week.

Online travel sales were particularly affected, falling 55 percent to USD144 million for the period between Tuesday and Sunday.

Sales on Tuesday and Wednesday were 47 percent lower than on the same days the week before, but sales picked up on Thursday, rising to USD124 million from USD85 million on Wednesday.

These estimates are for all sales made by major consumer retail sites aimed at US users, but they exclude sales on auction sites such as eBay.

ComScore also found that charity sites collected USD30 million between Tuesday and Sunday of last week. Over 70 percent of this money went to the Red Cross, while about 10 percent was donated from outside the US.
